Lesson Plan 1: Dear Abby, Dear Abby (Self Directed)

The purpose of this lesson is for students to create and answer questions concerning a variety of career choices in the form of a newspaper advice column.

Students will:

• demonstrate an ability to conduct website research.
• apply research skills to acquire information for career possibilities.
• show skills in creative writing and cognitive understanding.

1 class

Grades 7 to 12

Provide students with:

• access to StudentCounsellor.com.
• a sample advice column from a newspaper.
• some sample questions they may consider for their columns.

Students will submit an advice column with at least three questions and answers, and a list of three initial questions. The assessment should be based on each student’s ability to provide:

• thoughtful and useful questions.
• accurate responses to the questions.
• creativity in the responses and format.
