1. I have several teachers who will also be using StudentCounsellor.com. How can I help get them started?

StudentCounsellor.com will provide each teacher with a personal username and password, specially designated to allow them access to the Educator Resource Room, as well as the rest of the site. In the Educator Resources Room, they will find a number of tools to assist them in getting started including a printer-friendly Orientation Manual and 36 Lesson Plans. We also offer telephone orientations to those who wish to be walked through the site by one of our Customer Service representatives. Please contact our Help Desk at service@studentcounsellor.com or 1-888-617-7855 ext. 220 to request teacher usernames and passwords and orientations.


2. How do students log on to StudentCounsellor.com?

Students can access StudentCounsellor.com using their school's universal username and password provided to counsellors of subscribing schools. The universal username and password assigned to each school allows students from that school to login and immediately begin using the site. As soon as the student wishes to access one of the personalized features of StudentCounsellor.com they will be prompted to create their own personal username and password, which is what they will use to login from that point forward.


3. Our school uses specific software to prevent the viewing of inappropriate web sites. Will this affect our use of StudentCounsellor.com?

Most software products, such as Net Nanny, allow you to define safe sites; sites that your students are permitted to view. You will need to include StudentCounsellor.com on this list to avoid difficulty in accessing our site. 4. Since students are able to use StudentCounsellor.com at home, what kind of information can we offer parents about your service?

We have posted a printer friendly Parent Brochure in the Educator Resources section under Learning Materials. Please feel free to make copies for distribution to parents. You may also wish to include an announcement in school newsletters or post information about StudentCounsellor.com on your school web site.


5. How does StudentCounsellor.com gather the information published on schools and programs?

StudentCounsellor.com has researchers who gather all of the information we publish. Our researchers have established contacts with program advisors, admissions officers and the registrar's office from all schools listed on StudentCounsellor.com. Researchers gather information through interviews and institute publications.


6. How does StudentCounsellor.com gather the information published on careers?

StudentCounsellor.com gathers career information from a variety of sources such as Job Futures and the National Occupation Classification. Our career information is continually updated and maintained throughout the year.


7. How current is the information on StudentCounsellor.com?

The information on StudentCounsellor.com is continually updated and monitored for accuracy throughout the year. Because StudentCounsellor.com is an on-line service, we are able to immediately up-date our information at any point in time.


8. How can I get help using a specific section of StudentCounsellor.com?

By clicking on the Help button in the navigation bar you will access our context sensitive Help section. This means you will be provided with information relevant to the specific part of the web site you are currently using.


9. What other resources are available to assist counsellors and teachers in using StudentCounsellor.com?

The Educator Resources section of StudentCounsellor.com contains several resources providing assistance to counsellors and teachers. These resources include a comprehensive orientation manual and 36 lesson plans.


10. Why does my computer always show the same Wizard results no matter what search I am doing?

This occurs if the Internet Options on your browser are set to store and show old pages of our site. It is easy to change this setting, so that each time you visit our site you will view the most recent version of each page. Follow the instructions below for the appropriate browser you are using.

3. Under "Temporary Internet Files" click "Settings"
4. Under "Check for newer versions of stored pages" click "Every visit to the Page"
5. Click OK

11. How was StudentCounsellor.com started?

StudentCounsellor.com was developed by EI as a natural extension of it's existing expertise to help students plan their postsecondary education. The development of StudentCounsellor.com took nearly 18 months and was done in partnership with SchoolNet, Industry's Canada's initiative to help connect schools to the Internet. As part of the development of StudentCounsellor.com, EI consulted with hundreds of counsellors and students, as well as conducted a field test of the service in the school setting.
